Rabbits may be cute, but they can be a huge detriment to any garden. Any gardener that has a rabbit issue will know that they will chew through a large number of flowers and vegetables alike. While removal of the pesky critters is the most effective way to keep them out of your garden, planting certain plants can help prevent more of them from chewing up your garden. Plant some of these beautiful additions to your garden turn away rabbits.
Woody Plants
Rabbits are not fans of wooden plants like azaleas or mountain laurel. Both have beautiful flowers that provide plenty of color to your garden. Rabbits can’t chew through the woody stems and prefer to avoid these.
Bulbs
Daffodils and Hyacinths are two bulbs that Rabbits can’t stand. While rabbits do eat some bulb plants, daffodils and hyacinths have a much lower toxicity level; which may be why they are avoided. Daffodils are also known for their ability to repel mice.
Vegetables
It’s no surprise that rabbits will munch on the vegetables in your garden. But there are a few different vegetables that rabbits avoid. Tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and summer squash are generally avoided by rabbits. While they won’t repel them, growing these vegetables in place of their favorites can often make them look elsewhere for food.
Herbs
Herbs are often shown to repel certain animals or pests due to the pungent earthy aromas. Rabbits, with their keen sense of smell, often stay away from gardens growing sage, rosemary, and basil. These strongly scented herbs are great to have fresh for the kitchen and can help repel rabbits from your garden.
