Repellent sound devices use loud or high-pitched sounds to scare away rodents. Or so they claim. But do these devices actually get the job done?
How do Sound Repellent Systems Work?
Generally, these devices are either plug-in or battery-operated. Once activated, the device releases a high-pitched noise. While adults will likely not hear it, kids and teens may notice it. Pets will also likely hear it. The point of the noise is to be uncomfortable to animals. Devices may release the sound continuously, be motion-activated, or trigger periodically, depending on the design. Ideally, a rodent will hear the noise and flee. However, this is more of a short-term solution at best.
Why are They Not a Permanent Solution?
In addition to annoying your pets, these machines do not do a sufficient job at repelling pests. While they may initially scare rodents away, they will often return. Once the rodent realizes there is no danger associated with the noise (such as a predator), they will come back with no fear. Squirrels, rats, and mice can all adapt to exist within the effective range of these devices. In some cases, they will even learn where in the area the motion sensor devices trigger. Overall, the critters will be back.
Consumer Protections and Sound Repellent Devices
Unlike many other rodent removal tools, sound repellent devices are not regulated in the US by the EPA. As such, the companies aren’t generally required to prove that they work as intended.
