Foxes are a nuisance animal across the whole of the New York and New Jersey area. From denning under sheds to raiding garbage cans, they can cause a lot of problems for homeowners. Below, we will discuss some common signs that you may have a fox problem on your property.
Types of Foxes in NY and NJ
There are 2 species of foxes in New York and New Jersey. The red fox is more common across both states, and what most people spot near their homes. They have reddish or rust colored fur. The red fox is comfortable in both wooded and urban areas. They are more likely to encroach on human dwellings.
The gray fox is the other fox species in our area. They are generally smaller and more agile than the reds. These foxes are less suited for urban life and tend to stick to more wooded areas. They are more likely to be found in rural areas or on the outskirts of suburban neighborhoods. While both species are good at climbing, grays excel at scaling trees.
Fox Activity
Both gray and red foxes tend to be crepuscular (active around dusk) or nocturnal. This will generally depend on their individual needs, given their environments. They will hunt small animals, scavenge garbage, and even raid gardens. They are opportunistic and omnivorous eaters.
Fox Dens on Your Property
Foxes may den on your property if they find it to be suitable. They may burrow under existing structures, such as sheds or planter boxes. But they may also find suitable dens under wood piles, decks, or patios. They may also enter crawl spaces or basements for shelter if possible.
Foxes and Your Pets
Foxes will defend themselves if they feel threatened by a dog. Smaller outdoor cats may be hunted by foxes if they feel they are vulnerable enough. A fox can carry mange, rabies, or other illnesses and parasites that can threaten your pets. When your pets are outside, keep them on a leash so you can pull them away from other animals if needed. Never let your pets outside without supervision. If your pet is injured by a wild animal, take them to the vet as soon as possible.
