In New York and New Jersey, rodent sightings are a fact of life. When you have a mouse infestation in your home, it will likely be one of 4 species of mice common in our area. These are the field, eastern deer, house, or white-footed mice. Below, we will discuss the differences between the species and how they might affect your property.
Field Mice
Despite their name, field mice are not mice. Rather, they are Eastern Meadow Voles. Voles are a type of rodent more closely related to hamsters. They have smaller ears, shorter tails and legs. Their bodies and noses are stubbier than mice. Field mice can wreak havoc on gardens, chewing through flowers, bulbs, roots, and vegetables. They also tend to dig tunnels similarly to moles. While a field mouse may find it’s way into your home, they are just as likely to hide within your shed or lawn.
Eastern Deer Mice
The eastern dear mouse is the most common mouse type in New York. They are built for climbing, with sharp claws. In nature, they are most at home in tree hollows. Small alcoves in crawlspaces and attics make premium real estate for these rodents. They breed incredibly rapidly, making them a fast-growing issue for homeowners.
The House Mouse
The common house mouse is what most people think of when they imagine a mouse. They have large ears, a thin tail, and gray or brown fur. They are highly adaptable and very comfortable with urban living. These sneaky critters are especially formidable at hiding. Most homeowners will find gnaw marks or droppings before they see a house mouse in their home.
White-footed Mouse
White-footed mice are also commonly found in homes. They are similarly adapted to home living to the house mouse, but they have distinctive white or gray colorations on their legs.
