Snakes are cold-blooded creatures that hold about 2900 species of serpents. As these animals have been around for centuries, most people have a preconceived idea that all snakes are dangerous, while most snakes are actually non-venomous. Learn about three of the most dangerous kinds of snakes that could be in your area.

Elapid snakes are poisonous, with venom filled glands in the rear of their upper jaws. With long, slender bodies and smooth scales. One type of Elapid, the Coral snake, are usually found in North America. They have been spotted in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and occasionally in Oklahoma. According to the American National Institutes of Health, there are an average of 15–25 coral snake bites in the United States each year

Viperidae snakes, more commonly known as vipers, are also known for their fangs. Unlike the Elapiades, vipers are able to retract and extend their fangs. While unthreatened, these fangs remain folded back against the roof of their mouth. When their mouth opens, the fangs extend into a biting position. The most common vipers include Copperheads, Rattlesnakes, and Saw-scaled viper.

Colubridae snakes are usually non venomous, lack a functioning left lung, and their heads are covered by large scales. With these similarities aside, Colubridae snakes are very different. Some are ground-dwellers, while others are found near bodies of water. A popular member of this species is the garter snake, also known as the garden snake. These are one of the most common snakes found in North America. Opposed to most other snakes, garter snakes react to threat by releasing a musky odor.

Boidae snakes are non-venomous, but huge and powerful constrictors. Boidaes are most known for their ability to swallow a grown animal whole, and rely on their strength to suffocate prey. Although they don’t have fangs, they have rows of teeth on their upper and lower jaws. Some popular members of the Boidae family include Anacondas, and Boa constrictors. They are commonly found in Central and South America.
