Bed Bug Infestation

bigstock-bedbug-22039379Bed bugs are on the rise in New York City. Bed bug populations have been reported in recent years after almost 50 years of being quiet. What are bed bugs? How can you prevent and or get rid of them? NYNJ Wildlife removal has some important information everyone should know. Bed bugs are small, nocturnal, wingless insects that are from the Cimicidae family. They always feed on human blood and other warm-blooded hosts. Bed Bugs are also oval shaped and can grow up to 4 to 5 mm long when fully grown. Their color ranges from rust brown to a deeper red brown. They also prefer to eat during the night while their host is fast asleep. After feeding bed bugs go back to hide in cracks, crevices, mattress seams, sheets, furniture, baseboards, electrical outlets and picture frames. They are mostly found in hotels where they can go room to room in a visitor’s bags and luggage. Keep in mind that female bed bugs can drop one to five eggs a day and can lay 200 to 500 eggs in their lifetime. An infestation can develop very fast, so that’s why it’s important to know how to prevent and call an exterminator to handle the situation.

How do you know if you’re house is infested?

The first thing you will notice is physically seeing a bed bug. Also, you will see case skins from juvenile bugs as they shed their skins around the house. Another important finding is the fecal remains they leave which appears as black to brown stains on surfaces. The main indication of an infestation is bites on your body which cause red welts on the skin.  If you notice any of these indications call an exterminator right away to solve the problem! Remember a bed bug infestation has nothing to do with how clean your house is etc. They can hitch a ride anywhere from hotels, stores, movie theaters and much more!
