Raccoon Diseases and Prevention Methods

Raccons have adapted to life in urban and suburban areas. Be aware that raccons can carry diseases that can be spread to pets and humans. Some of the diseases carried by raccoons include Rabies, Raccoon Roundworm and Leptospirosis.

Rabies is a disease which is caused by a virus and is almost always fatal. It can be spread through saliva getting into an open wound or a bite. Raccoon Roundworm are passed through feces that can be left behind. Pets can be infected by swallowing eggs in feces, soil or water. The larvae hatch and move into different parts of the body and can cause serious illness within a week. Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria carried in the urine of raccoons and other animals. People and animals can get infected through contact of the skin, mouth, nose or throat with contaminated water. Dogs are especially suceptible to the disease and can die from it.

These simple safety tips can help prevent disease from raccoons. Do not allow raccoons into your residence. Don't feed raccoons in your area. Feed your pets inside your home and store pet food in the home. Keep pets inside at night. Keep raccoons from entering through pet doors and other openings.
